The Charity Ball

The Charity Ball – Le Bal de Bienfaisance (FR sous-titres)

A local village held a Charity Ball to raise money for a villager with health problems. Vlad went along (without Marlowe) and filmed the dinner-dance, with 160 people present. It was a Bal Musette and, though the music was excellent, he couldn’t resist using a different soundtrack for the purposes of the video rather than a fragmentary pot-pourri of accordion classics. Ars longa vita brevis…

Tree Worship

Tree Worship – Le Culte de l’Arbre  (FR sous-titres)

Vlad takes Marlowe for a walk in a local forest and recalls that D. H. Lawrence touched on the subject of tree worship in one of his two books on psychoanalysis, Fantasia of the Unconscious (1922). As they meander, he recites an extract from this powerful meditation on the silent beings who tower over us. In the centre of the forest, they come to an ancient tree that seems to be the focus of a contemporary Druidic ritual.

A Shortcut in Time

A Shortcut in Time – Un Raccourci Dans le Temps (FR sous-titres)

In Azay-sur-Indre, after presenting the village, Vlad finds a ticket in the road marked “Shortcut in Time”. In a jiffy, the ticket transports him and Marlowe into a parallel world, a space-time continuum that resembles our own, though slightly richer in colour and with certain oddities, such as curious things inexplicably hanging from trees. Luckily the “Shortcut in Time” ticket is a day return, so they are deposited back in our own humdrum sphere at the end of their quantum-world escapade – safe and sound, if a little bewildered!

Dog Walkers United!

Dog Walkers United! (FR sous-titres)
Vlad shares some of the reactions he’s had to his Vlog, not all of them flattering. He explains the guiding principle of the Vlog and announces that today they will have company – Jonathan, Emma and Muffin the dog. The three friends arrive and they set off for a bracing constitutional. When his guests have left, Vlad does one of the magic tricks he previously performed for Emma – a stunning and utterly baffling card trick, filmed in real time, no sneaky editing, no funny games – just The Business! “How did you do that?!”

String Theory

String Theory – La Théorie des Cordes (FR sous-titres)

The video starts with Vlad and Marlowe waiting for daybreak before heading out. Vlad uses the pre-dawn hour to explain his theory about travelling distances between villages and how, for ramblers, distance becomes immaterial. He backs up his possibly specious explanation with a mystifying “String Theory” magic trick. The sun rises, the cock crows, and off they head for Varennes, to explore new worlds, new civilisations – to boldly go where no dogs and men have been before. Possibly… well, let’s pretend… (It’s what Vlad told Marlowe – and in the Quantum World, everything is true, and its opposite… ).

Space Walk

Space Walk – Sortie Dans l’Espace (FR sous-titres)

Given mankind’s dreary wallowing in self-obsession, an incredible item of news passed almost unnoticed. Vlad sheds light on this and explains why he and Marlowe have come to Tauxigny for a “Space Walk”. Vlad’s camera captures all the macrocosmic and microcosmic facets of their walk. The haunting music is Mysterious Mountain (1955) by Alan Hovhaness, an American-Armenian composer of nebulous and celestial subtlety.

Réserve Louans

Réserve Louans (FR sous-titres)

Vlad drops a cat called Angel Cake off for an operation at the vet’s in Louans, the village where he first landed in Touraine in 1976. It’s a freezing February day, but he can’t resist a walkabout which takes him round the village and out to the cemetery, through the countryside and into a forest to at last set eyes on something that he’d always heard about but never actually seen…

All About Esves

All About Esves (FR sous-titres)

Today, Vlad and Marlowe start their walk at Esves le Moutier, another moribund village in Touraine. Moribund, but oozing with charm. What’s wrong with people? Why don’t they want to live in a gorgeous place like this? The 7km walk around the village is most beautiful, with healing waters being a main theme – hence the choice of music. And inevitably they find themselves once again in the tracks of Saint Martin! Enough said. Please enjoy the video. It is late February and one senses it’s the tail end of winter, on the cusp of spring…

Rainy Day in Reignac

Rainy Day in Reignac – La Pluie Règne sur Reignac (FR sous-titres)

Vlad and Marlowe go for a walk in and around Reignac-sur-Indre. A rainy day and the river is still in full spate.

La Fontaine Saint-Martin

La Fontaine Saint-Martin (FR sous-titres)

Echoes of 4th-century Saint Martin are everywhere in Touraine. Vlad and Marlowe go to the village of La Chapelle Blanche Saint-Martin, then to La Fontaine Saint-Martin – a natural spring in the middle of the countryside where, 1700 years ago, Saint Martin stopped for a quick wash-n-brush-up after a nasty experience on the road. The spring is now said to have miraculous powers. Vlad tells the tale, while Marlowe – always a creature of actions rather than words – takes a refreshing dip, oblivious to therapeutic agendas.
